A simple approach to learning SEO

Set up a site in WordPress on an affordable hosting platform and install an SEO plugin like Yoast.

Decide what you want to write about and start Googling that topic:

  • How are your “competitors” writing about it?
  • What are they doing with their title tags?
  • Do they have multiple pages or just one discussing it? If multiple, how are they linking between these pages?
  • What questions are they answering on their pages?

Write your content with these competitor insights in mind.

Set up Google Search Console.

Work out how to get Google to crawl your site – XML sitemap, internal linking – and use GSC to validate that it is.

Keep an eye on the queries coming into your pages and tune your content to make it better for your users. A good sign that your content is better for users is that it gets more clicks.

Keep going. Find out what works and doesn’t work and do more of the stuff that works.
