Evaluating market demand

Here’s a hypothetical problem: product and marketing teams see the market demand as different.

One sees things going up, the other sees things flat or going down.

Here are some questions I’m thinking about:

Do we need to change the metrics the marketing team views? Maybe this means looking at “Share of Voice” instead of traffic, clicks, and impressions. Or do product and marketing need to do a better job of aligning, as an organization, on how the market is looking at any given time.

What factors do we think influence this direction and how do we validate? For example, historically, higher education sees market demand go up when the economy is down. More people head back to school when the job market isn’t good.

Aligning and what the opportunity is feels like an important first step in defining and agreeing upon the work that needs to be done.
