Optimization to growth

I’ve been in a new role at Graphite for a month now. A big shift for me has been from looking for optimization opportunities to growth ones. At previous roles, where I’ve been in more of an optimization mindset, the general workflow went something like this:

Me: “Here’s a granular technical thing I’ve found that may or may not have a big impact.”

Web/dev teams: “OK, cool. Thanks!”

Which would usually lead to the recommendation getting buried in backlog never to be seen again.

Changing mindset

Now, though, I’ve been trying to actively avoid these more granular opportunities for business changing ones. These are opportunities and initiatives that could have the potential to drastically increase organic traffic – tripling or quadrupling over the course of a year.

This has been exciting but has also necessitated unwinding some of the frameworks and learning I’d done while on an in-house SEO team.

Obviously, I’ve got much more to learn, but some questions I’m thinking about are:

  • How does growth continue to compound? Or how does a growth marketer continue to find worthwhile opportunities? It’s easier when a site is only getting a few clicks per day. Any growth at that point is substantial. But what about when a site is already generating a significant amount of clicks?
  • How does a growth marketer continually ideate? Is a case of thinking about all the bad ideas too and getting them out of your system?
